Finance Minister Taro Aso on Thursday held a brief phone conversation with U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Japan’s Finance Ministry said, as they seek to deepen bilateral economic cooperation.
During the roughly five-minute conversation conducted in English, Aso and Mnuchin expressed their hope that a first face-to-face meeting can be arranged when Group of 20 finance ministers and central bankers gather in March in Germany.
Aso and Mnuchin did not discuss currency issues, a senior government source said.
It was the first contact between Aso and Mnuchin, after the latter assumed his post on Monday. Aso congratulated him on his confirmation, according to the ministry.
If a meeting between Aso and Mnuchin is organized in Germany’s Baden-Baden in March, currency policy could be an agenda item.
