Washington Would not Object to TPP Going Ahead Without US

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross indicated on May 9 that Washington would not object to an 11-party Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal without the United States.

“If that happens, I don’t think we have any inherent objection to it,” Ross said in an address in Washington on May 9. The United States has already declared its departure from the free trade accord.

Ross said that the U.S. would be pursing individual agreements with the countries involved in the TPP, stating that bilateral negotiations would be faster and better. He thus underscored the advantages of engaging in negotiations individually, even if they were based on the content of the TPP agreement.
