China Vice Premier Wants to Restart Economy Talks with Japan

Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang has called for resumption of high-level talks among economy-related ministers from China and Japan that have not been held since 2010.

Wang made the proposal at a Wednesday meeting with a delegation of the Japan-China Economic Association, including Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) Chairman Sadayuki Sakakibara and other businesspeople.

Wang, in charge of external economic affairs, would be cochair of the high-level talks. His comment seems to be a strong signal that China is ready to expand its exchanges with Japan again, a senior official of the association said.

At the request of the Japanese business delegation, Wang also expressed his willingness to resume public-private dialogue on energy-saving measures and the environment between the two countries, also halted since 2012.

At the meeting with Wang, Fujio Cho, chief of the association and honorary chairman of Toyota Motor Corp., requested China accept a meeting between the Japanese and Chinese top leaders at an early time.
