Nikkei fell sharply Friday amid disappointment over the European Central Bank’s measures to tackle the eurozone debt crisis.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 98.07 points, or 1.13 percent, from Thursday at 8,555.11. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 9. 04 points, or 1.23 percent, lower at 723.94.
Losers included the sea transport, iron and steel and pulp and paper sectors. Gainers included the oil and coal products, electricity and gas and mining sectors.
The turnover was about 943.1 billion yen (about 12.06 billion U. S.dollars).
