Last Chance for Juppe to Secure Republican Nomination

Alain Juppe gets a final chance to salvage his presidential campaign Thursday night.

The Bordeaux mayor, who until days ago was the all-out favorite to be France’s next president, faces former Prime Minister Francois Fillon in a nationally televised debate ahead of their Sunday run-off to see who will be the candidate of the Republicans.

Juppe finished a distant second to Fillon in the first round last Sunday and has since given television, radio and newspaper interviews to insist Fillon’s economic policies are too extreme for the centrist voters that could decide next year’s election. But the math is against him in the primary.
