U.S. consumer sentiment has slumped so far this month, according to the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan preliminary consumer sentiment index for May that was released Friday.
The overall sentiment reading decreased to 81.8 as of mid-May from 84.1 at the end of April, according to news reports.
Expectations had been for the reading to come in at 84.5 to 85.0.
